La Nueva Outlander 2004 Mivec

But, it's the Outlander that is our focus and we're here to report that it is now worthy of comparison with anything in its class. When we first drove the Outlander about a year ago, we were less than impressed with its on-road performance. Work was already underway on correcting this shortcoming. We hadn't gone more than a few blocks with the 2004 model before noticing the added power, which literally transforms the vehicle. We clocked some impromptu zero to 100 km/h acceleration times at the Canadian launch a year ago, recording times in the 15.7 second range with two passengers. With the same two people aboard, the 2004 model stopped the watches at less than 12 seconds - a very significant improvement.

Mitsubishi engineers did a great job of keeping the floor low, enhancing the ease of entry and exit, while keeping the high seating position so popular among consumers. It also has the ground clearance to take advantage of the available all-wheel drive system. The front seats are comfy, supportive and roomy. The rears fold down to enlarge the already impressive cargo area. The hydraulically assisted tailgate swings up and out of the way instead of opening sideways - the wrong way - like many competitors.

The Outlander might be late to the party, but it has come dressed to attract attention. Mitsubishi prides itself on design and the Outlander showcases this with stylish touches inside and out. Fit, finish and materials are also above average for this class and price.

The instrument panel is ergonomically correct with legible gauges and controls that are where you'd expect and operate with a pleasant familiarity. The engineers have spent considerable time in the NVH lab removing unwanted or unpleasant noise, vibration and harshness from this year-old design. To lower cabin noise levels, special insulation was developed for front deck and fender installation while insulation in the dash was made thicker. The intake system on the new engine was also tuned for lower noise.

The big news for 2004 is the substitution of the original 140 horsepower, 2.0-litre 4-cylinder engine with a new 2.4-litre unit producing a hefty 160 horses. More importantly, it has been tuned to produce more torque at low revs making the new engine even more impressive.(esto es para JG) The optional adaptive 4-speed automatic has a 'Sport' mode allowing the driver to actuate clutchless shifts should he or she desire. Front-drive is standard and full-time all-wheel drive is optional.

The Outlander can also hold its own in the ride and handling departments with a 4-wheel independent design that allows this tallish vehicle to behave as if it sits much closer to terra firma. Sixteen-inch wheels and tires provide a big footprint for good grip and a deep sidewall for ride comfort.
